Your sales are the menu price. The tax is never yours. The service charge is yours or your team's, by your own rule.

How it works
How do you work out a plus plus price?
Four sums, in plain words. Both rates are yours to type: this page offers none of its own.
Service charge
Menu price times your service charge rate
Tax
Menu price and service charge times your tax rate
What the guest pays
Menu price plus service charge plus tax
The price to print
What the guest pays divided by the two rates together
Where a bill works the tax out on the menu price alone, the tax line uses the menu price alone. The calculator asks you which one your own bill does.
Plus plus, and nett
A plus plus price has the service charge and the tax added at the till, so the guest pays more than the menu says. A nett price has both inside it already, so the figure on the menu is the figure the guest pays. To turn a nett figure into the price for your menu, choose The price to print above.
An example, line by line
Invented rates, a service charge of 10% and a tax of 8%, on a menu price of 100. Your own rates go in the calculator above.
| Line | How it is worked out | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Menu price, what you print | you typed it | 100.00 |
| Service charge, at the rate you typed | 100.00 times 10% | 10.00 |
| Price with the service charge | 100.00 plus 10.00 | 110.00 |
| Tax, at the rate you typed | 110.00 times 8% | 8.80 |
| The guest pays | 110.00 plus 8.80 | 118.80 |
| Added on top of the menu price | 118.80 less 100.00 | 18.80 |
18.8 on top of 100, where the two rates read 10 and 8. The tax goes on the service charge as well, so the two rates multiply. That is why a round figure on the bill rarely comes from a round price on the menu.
Starting from what the plate costs you? The free food cost calculator gives the menu price for the food cost percent you aim at. Bring that price here to see what the guest pays.
Questions
Questions about plus plus prices.
What does ++ mean on a restaurant menu?
It means the price you print is lower than the price the guest pays. A service charge goes on first. Then tax goes on the price with the service charge in it. Two amounts, one after the other. A price with nothing on top is often written nett.
How do you work out a plus plus price?
Start with the price you want to print. Add the service charge: that price times your service charge rate. Add the tax on the total so far. The sum is what the guest pays. The calculator on this page does all three steps as you type.
How do you find the menu price when you know what the guest should pay?
Work backwards. Divide the figure you want the guest to pay by the two rates together. What is left is the price to print. Choose The price to print above, type the figure, and you get the printable price under it and the printable price over it.
Is tax worked out on the service charge as well?
On many bills it is, so the tax sits on the menu price and the service charge together. On others it sits on the menu price alone. The rule belongs to the place you trade in, and it changes. Read one of your own bills, or ask your accountant, then set the switch to match.
What does nett mean on a menu?
It means the printed price is the price the guest pays. Nothing goes on at the till. To print a nett price you work backwards: start from what the guest pays, take out the tax, then take out the service charge. What is left is the price for the menu.
Why is the exact menu price never a round one?
The two rates multiply, so a round total divided by them lands between two prices a menu would print. This page offers the printable price under it and the printable price over it, each with the bill it makes. You choose which one goes on the menu.
Which service charge and tax rate should I type in?
The rates that apply to your own restaurant. They differ by country, by city, and sometimes by the kind of venue. This page fills in nothing for you, because a rate nobody checked is worse than an empty box. Take both from your own tax papers or from your accountant.
Does the service charge count as my sales?
That depends on the rule where you trade and on what your venue promised its team. Some restaurants pass all of it to the team. Some keep part of it. Mise keeps the service charge on a line of its own, so a month shows it apart from food and drink sales.
Is the calculator free, and is what I type kept?
It is free and it asks for no email. It runs in your browser, so what you type stays on your device. Nothing is sent to Mise and nothing is kept. Print the page to keep it. Any currency works, because you type the amounts yourself.
